White

The Design Element
White is such an underrated color. The following set of
sites put lots and lots of white space to use. This lends to a light and
airy feel, un congested and easy on the eyes. It seems that this is an underused
style that looks wonderful and has a great feel to it. In some ways it borders
on minimalism, but I believe it is more of a refined
style.
Take the
Coudal Partners
site for example. A very unpretentious site. Through simplicity and lots
of white space they create this beautiful design. It would have been so easy
to clutter this site up with complex visual elements, like the rest of the
web. Clearly the strong
use of typography greatly enhances the site, but white sets the mood.
I feel compelled to point out that white does not equal boring.
I know that I never think along these lines when sitting down to design
a site. I suspect that others do the same. Perhaps this will inspire us to
try a different route that can have outstanding results.
Connotations of white : Cleanliness, purity, life, stability,
trustworthy, peace, happiness, cold, marriage, goodness.
